sojourn . Flora and Fauna from Summer at Busy Bee

Farm days. They are always full of discovery, and the theme for last week’s trip seemed to be green, green and more green! We’ve returned from our annual sojourn to Noxubee County to kick-off summer vacation, and I’m always amazed at the new flora and fauna we find. It was unusually hot this year for May. At least it felt that way. So, lingering in some of our favorite activities was a little uncomfortable. But we enjoyed at least a few drives through the pastures and exploring. So many greens and blossoms. And, although some of my close-ups got a little grainy, we got to see a few critters, too. I hope you enjoy some of the sights of summer at Busy Bee, including some of the inspiration for the Small Pond…

I think this pond is the oldest of the three that are scattered through our property. I always love visiting it because it’s the closest to the little corner wood we like to explore. I guess it’s become a little bit of the symbolic inspiration of my current Small Pond endeavor – a touching point where I can connect what I do now to those treasured memories and grounding places. This trip, we saw dragon flies, frogs jumping, and a snake in pursuit. Thankfully, it was not in pursuit of us, but still fun to capture. The few willow trees that used to ring the pond are gone now, lost in a small expansion that happened last year. But, I was so excited to see the lily pads return and some of the wildflowers and buttercups make their debut again.

Aside from exploring the small pond, our summer got a fitting start with damp, foggy mornings, and hot, muggy afternoons. Rose of Sharon blooms, dewy spider webs, mimosa flowers reaching for the sunlight, making bubbles near the old, fallen “mining tree”, wild roses, and even a few odd pasture blooms I don’t remember seeing before… it was fun to take in the wildness of this place I love.
