my south . Amusements

I was completely soaked. Wet hair, wet clothes, and a heart and head full of wet giggles. My children were probably in preschool or maybe first or second grade, and we couldn’t stop squealing. We were visiting Gulf Shores, Alabama and had stopped into one of those arcade and go kart places to have some fun between beach combing. These were the days when taking three children under seven into even a mild surf was exhausting — grabbing on to hands, bracing to stand up, jumping waves, and frankly, holding them back. So, finding a place where we were all fenced in and also able to stand on our own two feet was a welcomed adventure. The kids weren’t tall enough for go karts, but we found the bumper boats. And, I’m sure you can imagine the scene.

photo essay . Icy Puddles

We’ve had a few milder Spring-like days this week — the typical January indecisiveness of Mississippi weather. It’s been fun to go out without coats, but we are anticipating the return of the cold tonight. Below-freezing temps had me thinking back to some icy walks we took during our Thanksgiving farm trip, and some photos I never shared. What began as an alert that “there’s GLASS on the road!!” ended with some chilly fun looking at the patterns water makes as it freezes. (And of course, the sound it makes as we break it!)  Winter has its own frosty beauty, even for those of us in the Deep South. Happy Wednesday!

photo essay . At the Speed of Summer

amuse9
Is anyone else in shock that summer vacation is over? My kiddos begin school tomorrow, and this year, all three are in “big school.” Our lazy, hazy days of summer have been filled with fun activities, swimming, yard work, relaxed schedules and our own brand of daily celebrations. Never is there another time when relaxing activities move so fast!

One of those week-long celebrations was our second annual trip to Gulf Shores, AL for plenty of sun and waves. It’s been a long time since I’ve been to an amusement park, but we were actually able to spend a couple of evenings at one in Gulf Shores. I had almost forgotten how alive they are with sights and sounds and movement. In between bumper boat showers, go cart races and carnival rides, I took a few snaps. Most of them have some blurred elements, as I tried to capture what you couldn’t possibly grab hold of… Life at the speed of summer. Enjoy!

photo essay . Seven Skies

Two weeks ago I took my kids to our family farm for Spring Break, and I spent some intentional time away from my project schedule. It’s been a while since I’ve done that, so it felt like a special treat. During the week I was experimenting with the Hipstamatic iPhone app. And I was experimenting with gazing at the skies for no good reason. Put the two together and it makes for these seven skies.

I’ve been trying to incorporate that same sky gazing into my routine back at home and work. Are you taking time to gaze today?

photo essay . Stone

I love the multi-colored grayness that stone and concrete adopt as they age. Time seems to soften even the hardest of materials.
