celebrate . Halloween in the House

Happy Halloween! Around here, we tend to merge our excitement for fall together with Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations that celebrate this long-awaited time of year. Cooler days, rustling leaves, bluer skies, pumpkins, and the smell of warm spices… the changing season settles in to our hearts and to our home. Even though our favorite activities for Halloween are changing, we never seem to outgrow the comfort that comes from pulling out our decorations, remembering favorite things, and creating a cozier feel in our rooms. On this day of spooks, I thought I’d share a glimpse of our Halloween in the house, and with it, a glimpse of my heart in yet another season of change.

October Field Guide [printable calendar]

Well, fall has officially arrived, and although the weather isn’t cooperating yet (at least in Mississippi), October has captured my attention — if only in wishful thinking. We may be sweating outside still, but around the Pond, my crew and I are undeterred in our excitement for all things autumn. This month is always like a new year, of sorts, for me, because it’s my birthday month — and 2019 is a momentous one! In keeping with our wishful thinking about fall, I’m sharing the art above as a free print. Just click it to download. I’ve also included a variation of it in my October calendar download. Plus, I’m giving you a peek at my newest print in the shop — an Autumn Field Guide!

September Field Guide [printable calendar]

I actually felt it today. As soon as I opened the door. And before the heat set in again. That shift. The small hints of coolness. The crisper air, less weighed down with humidity. September is here. It’s a month full of teasing as our hearts are ready for fall, but our temperatures are often stuck in summer. Whether it’s in that hint of a breeze or in the shift in sentiment, a change is in the air. I’ve taken a break from creating calendar pages for a few months, but I’m a bit renewed now and ready to mark these milestones again. September is a good time to start with its official change of season! I hope you enjoy this renewed field guide and “wonder” list for the month along with a companion printable calendar.

maker’s dozen . National Dog Day

Today is National Dog Day, and I decided to celebrate with a little Maker’s Dozen — 13 bits of studio nostalgia and ephemera that remind me of the four-footed and slobbery friends in our lives. Our family includes two pups, and at least one of them is a constant companion in the studio.

letters and numbers . Greenwood, MS No. 3

Delta Feed Company in Greenwood, MS

“There’s one!” When we have the chance for a family road trip, I’m likely to hear this from one of my children. I consider it a surprising byproduct of dragging them too often through back roads, two-lane highways, and sometimes questionable alleys in an attempt to capture photographs. Their exclamation usually refers to some specimen of graffiti, hand-painted letters or murals on the side of a building, or retro signage they may have spotted. I guess I’ve trained their vision through experience. These days, when I suggest we should take the long way to this place or that, one of them invariably adds “so you can get some photos!” I take an odd pride in the fact that they no longer question or wonder when I say “let’s just pull off here.” I think they’ve either accepted this strange penchant or decided it doesn’t matter — maybe even embraced the pursuit by discovering something of their own. As my astute 14-year-old reminds me, “weird is wonderful.” And, I suppose that explains this latest foray into Mississippi Delta letters and numbers.
