favorite things . The Candy Haul at Asheville’s Rocket Fizz

Our fall season officially kicked off last week with a trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, exploring the Smoky Mountains and navigating everyone’s excitement over cooler temperatures. I returned home tired but refreshed by the change of scenery, and excited to get our home ready for the fall season. Amidst the mums and gourds and pine straw bales, we have amassed quite a few happy jack-0-lanterns of all sizes and materials that I’ve been slowly spreading throughout the house. Some of those jack-o-lanterns are old familiar receptacles for Halloween night – buckets my children took to preschool, felt versions we bought on various fall trips, and even my own 1970’s childhood version. Those jack-o-lanterns represent the one-time excuse to indulge in fall’s favorite sugar rush. They collect the one Halloween accessory that gives pumpkins a run for their money – candy!

letters to my daughter 052118 . Brain Freeze Season

Summer vacation begins for us on Wednesday. We have big plans for small schedules and fun with our summer jar and each other. I predict a few brain freezes.

go . A Drive Through the Pass

I’ve been organizing some photographs this week, and looking back through what I captured during our summer adventures. As I wrote a few weeks ago, we tacked a few days onto the beginning of our annual beach trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama to explore the Mississippi Gulf Coast again for the first time in quite a few years. It was fun to go driving through the area again, and I think we must have hit about every downtown area along Highway 98 from Bay St. Louis over to Ocean Springs. I do a lot of design work for the Main Street development organization in Starkville, and it’s always neat to see what other towns are doing to preserve their core areas. Downtown districts often have a lot of history and character — sometimes some blight, but they are areas where I think we can see some of the personality of a place. I thought I would share some of the sights from our trek over a few different posts.

On the Fourth of July, we spent the afternoon taking in Long Beach pier where my husband spent so much time during his younger years, and we also enjoyed a little driving and shopping in Bay St Louis. In between those two coastal towns, we took a much-needed snack break in Pass Christian! We didn’t spend much time there, but it only took a short turn off the beachfront highway to find some neat sights.

Our favorite stops included a quick photo op at the “Our Lady of Guadalupe” shrine at St. Paul’s Catholic Church — a sculpture created by Harry Reeks. I love the vibrant colors and the ruff-hewn look of the piece.

We also found one of our new favorite cool-down places — the Pink Octopus, a decidedly “mod” little froyo shop on Davis Avenue. Coastal art, 60s-ish sphere seats, hot pink yogurt cups, metallic silver and turquoise, and of course, the yogurt! Can you tell we were excited? I know we’ll stop there again on our next trip to the Coast, and I hope we can explore a little more of what The Pass has to offer!

celebrate . Double Digits

This sweet guy turned 10 at the beginning of the month! My heart is still quite in shock that my first-born is now in double digits, but I’m so very proud of the smart, funny, courageous young man my Little Drummer Boy is becoming.

We celebrated the big 10 with a small “friend party” at a local gym, and decided on a “magic” theme. I had a great time painting and designing some invitations and trappings for my favorite client 🙂 so I thought I would share a peek at some of the preparations.

We used a magic hat and wand in the watercolor invitations, so I decided to go with that theme for some of the snacks. We made pretzel stick magic wands and chocolate-covered marshmallows sitting on oreos to create top hats. For the party centerpiece, I built a “magic hat” cake, complete with a bunny appearing out of it — fun times with black gel icing! We made mustache and bunny iced cookies, and I also had fun decorating some sheet cakes as playing cards for the card trick effect.

Now, I’m not a baker or a cake decorator, or even a great food crafter. I don’t really consider myself “good” at that kind of thing,  but I had a couple of crazy ideas to go along with the magic theme, and I had a really great time fleshing them out for us to enjoy. As moms, I think sometimes we try to hold ourselves to a standard of perfection in our pinterest-crazed world. During our prep time, I found myself thinking, “this looks so home-made,” as if the less-than-perfect icing was somehow a negative thing. The smiles on my kids’ faces were a good reminder that it really is the effort — the act of loving through doing and making — that counts most toward making memories. Not how smooth the icing is! So, with that disclaimer, here are a couple of peeks at our magic creations…

Over our holiday break in December, I developed some plans for a new collection of Valentines I was planning to launch that could be personalized for kids. I had spent some time brainstorming a list of silly sayings and notes for images I wanted to use. I floated this one past my focus group (read Montgomery kiddos) during the afternoon pick-up route a few weeks ago, and it passed the test of my 9-year-old, laughter-loving son — complete with the Italian-ish accent! Alas, some communications services I’ve been donating to a local organization over the last month have taken a higher place on my priority list, so I decided to keep the Valentine’s Day cards until next year.

I’m still in love with the ideas, even after V-Day passes. So, I decided to play around with a few in my morning painting time, and I’m thinking some may be a good fit for new greeting cards in the print shop. Stay tuned, and in the mean time… You Wanna Pizza Me?
